Burg Eltz

Last weekend the in-laws, Hubs, and I went to Burg Eltz, a well-preserved castle not too far away from our apartment. It also made the weekend tour list because it is open on Sundays- bonus. The castle has been in one family for about 800 years, and it's never been taken militarily. The counts and lords of Burg Eltz were very politically savy and aligned themselves with all sorts of neighbors and townspeople in order to ensure loyalty and protection. When the French rolled in and destroyed a bunch of other places, Burg Eltz was safe because one of the family members was a marshall in the French Army. Nice, right?


Pictures weren't allowed inside the castle, so you'll have to take my word for it- beautiful! My favorite room was the all-purpose one on the second floor. It was a bedroom, chapel, dining room thing and the walls were painted with green vines. The chapel was housed in the bay window with colorful stained glass and paintings depicting the Lord and Lady of the castle on the walls. The chapel was built into the window because nothing was supposed to be housed above it. Since bay windows have nothing above them, this works! Clever, right?
