Hauz Khas at Sunset (Part 4)

Sorry these posts are taking so long, y'all! Sometimes it seems so daunting to try and capture everything we saw in India that just the thought of logging in is exhausting. It's nearly impossible to describe the sights, sounds, tastes, smiles, emotions.

After touring the Red Fort, we decided to head back to Hauz Khas to grab a snack and cool down. We (mainly me) wanted to see more of the neighborhood, too, since the night before many things were closed by the time we got there.

Elma's

Hauz Khas has really grown in the last few years- many new restaurants, shops, and galleries. The streets an alleys were filled with young people and ex-pats (but not exclusively, which was refreshing). We made a beeline for Elma's, an adorable cafe with a pastry case that called to me. One of my favorite vacation activities is dining in the middle of the afternoon- pausing to have some treat that I wouldn't ordinarily enjoy and watching the world go by. It's such a simple thing, which is perhaps why it's my favorite.

Madrassa

After we had sufficiently cooled off, we wandered around the ruins of Deer Park and Feruz Shah's tomb. The Shah ruled in the 14th century and was apparently quite the visionary in terms of architecture and urban planning. On the grounds are a madrassa (Islamic school) dating from the 1350s (and considered the largest seminary of its time), a mosque, and the Shah's tomb. The tomb served nicely as a backdrop for some children playing a pretty intense game of cricket. The bowler was kind enough to pause as we walked by, though.

After enjoying the sunset, we needed some dinner. Our search for another recommended restaurant was unsuccessful so we wound up back at Elma's for some pretty delicious flatbread and a veggie sandwich. Not quite local but exactly what we wanted. There may or may not have been a second dessert, too...

Although we had been told that Delhi's nightlife is something to see, we walked back to our haveli and crashed in anticipation of a few long travel days ahead. I loved Delhi and almost wish we had another full day to explore something else- so many options!- but I have a feeling I'll be back someday.
